DETROIT — A semi, military vehicle and three sports cars, the real stars of the upcoming “Transformers 4” movie directed by Michael Bay, made an appearance in downtown Detroit Friday.

Behind a fence in a parking lot on Adams at Clifford, five characters from the movie faced the droves of fans and curious bystanders who approached, many with phones and cameras propped and ready to capture the moment.

At least two of the vehicles, Optimus Prime, a red, white and blue Western Star semi; and Bumblebee, a  re-envisioned in and highly modified, vintage 1967 Camaro, are returning for the fourth installment in the blockbuster Hollywood series. The other Autobots — the good guys in the film — are new characters that have yet to appear in the first three films.

Although the movie plot takes place in China, much of the footage has been filmed in Detroit, where cameras continued to roll on closed streets not far from the Autobot  display Friday.

Among the hundreds of spectators is Kevin, 41 and his two children, daughter Sierra, 9, and son Blake, 13, who the biggest fan of the trio from Ortonville.

“He’s seen all of the movies, so we thought we’d come down and see the new ones,” said Kevin.

The Transformers franchise exploded into mainstream America in the early-1980s, around the time Kevin was his son’s age.

Blake says his favorite character from the first two Transformer movies was Optimus Prime. Bumble Bee took the honor in the third.

“This is going to be like a war zone,” he said, imagining how the magic of Hollywood will transform downtown Detroit into another world once it makes its way to the big screen.
