If there’s one thing that I love doing, it’s helping people who deserve it. I was afforded this opportunity through Stones Detroit this morning with a message from an old friend. Many, many people are familiar with the story of Dominick Calhoun. For those of you who are not, it is a horrific story of unimaginable child abuse.
Dominick was a four year old little boy who died after he was taken off of life support on April 10, 2010. The several days prior were as appalling as any story of abuse that I’ve ever heard. Dominick was beaten by his mother’s boyfriend, Brandon Hayes, over a span of four days. I choose to not go into the sickening details, instead I would like to try to help bring some well-deserved happiness to Dominick’s father, Eric Calhoun.
Eric has gone through some rough patches in his life, after his son died, he vowed to turn his life around. Eric has dedicated his life to child abuse awareness. He and his family have worked tirelessly to have Dominick’s Law come to fruition which calls for longer sentences for those convicted of child abuse. It makes it a crime for witnesses of child abuse to ignore it and do nothing. It also adds penalties for those who commit abuse in front of other kids.
If anyone is worthy of a happy ending, it is a child abuse advocate and there is no bigger advocate than Eric Calhoun. Not long after Dominick’s death, Eric met Jessica Baird. She jumped on board without hesitation and has taken on their fight against abuse. She often serves as his rock when he needs a shoulder. The couple is engaged and planning to wed August 3rd of this year. They entered in a contest in the hopes of winning a $5000 wedding give away. This is where all of us come in. Eric and Jessica don’t have a lot of money and this would give them the wedding of their dreams.
Stones Detroit is asking their followers to take a moment and vote for Eric and Jessica. After living through what we all consider to be our worst nightmare, Eric deserves his happily ever after. It’s as easy as following the link and clicking vote.
